Wales fell to a 4-0 defeat against top seeds Belgium in the opening match of the 2019 Women’s U17 European Championship Elite Round in Austria.
Belgium 4-0 Wales
- Wils 13', Lemmens 54', Eurlings 64', Buyle 86'
Jayne Ludlow’s young side battled well in the first half, creating chances through the threatening Cerys Jones leading the team from the front and goalkeeper Poppy Soper kept the Belgian chances at bay. However, the deadlock was broken as a driven cross from the right-hand side landed at the feet of Tess Wils who found the back of the net.
With Wales pushing for an equaliser in the second half, Belgium exploited the space and eventually found three more goals of their own. The most impressive of the goals came for Hannah Eurlings with a fine volley from the edge of the box to find the top corner.
Despite the score line, Wales continued to press and were unlucky not to find a consolation goal with opportunities coming for Carrie Jones and Ava Suckley.
Wales will now look ahead to their second match in the Elite Round when they face hosts Austria on Wednesday (KO 17:00).
It was a great opportunity for our young players to compete against a top level age group team and the progress our youth teams have made over the years was evident. Unfortunately mistakes around our box cost us but we know it's something we can work on for the other matches.
