On the Isle of Anglesey (Ynys Mon), an international football tournament including men’s and women’s teams from all over the world is set to get underway, as the Inter-Island Games Football Tournament kicks off on Sunday, 16 June.
Huws Gray Ynys Mon 2019 will see 16 teams representing small islands from across the globe from 15 June to 22 June to compete in the competition that Ynys Mon hosts for the first time ever.
The International Island Games is a competition often dubbed the ‘Mini Olympics’ and is open to islands across the world whose population is under 125,000. Ynys Mon was a founding member of the Game in 1985s, which is the third biggest sporting competition in the world in terms of the number of athletes competing.
This year, the full Games are in Gibraltar, but they don’t have enough pitches to host the football competition, so Ynys Mon stepped in as hosts of the football for the first time ever and will welcome 10 men’s teams and six women’s teams to the island.
Making up the Ynys Mon teams is the very best of footballing talent born and bred on the island, with Men’s and Women’s JD Welsh Premier League players contained in both squads, as well as Wales Women’s most-capped goalkeeper Nicky Davies, in addition to representatives from squads throughout the Welsh domestic pyramid.
The FAW and FAW Trust have worked in partnership with the tournament organisers to arrange a host of activities throughout the week to help increase participation and inclusion in football on the island.
On Saturday 15 June, the day of the tournament’s opening ceremony, there will be a McDonald’s Fun Football Festival hosted at Holyhead Hotspur that is open to youngsters all over the island who can come and enjoy a fantastic fun-filled day of football.
In partnership with the Urdd, there will a Girls Football Festival at Plas Arthur’s 3G in Llangefni on Wednesday, 19 June where young girls from school years three to six from across the island have been invited to come and enjoy a day of football and will be joined by the Ynys Mon Women’s Football Team for part of the event.
Entry to every match at the tournament is absolutely free, as the organisers are hoping to have generations of football fans from across the island come out and support all of the teams and be inspired by the high standard of men’s and women’s football that is coming to the island.
